Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM CDT
Event Description:
Free Workshops on Safe Use of Pain Medications Offered

The Jefferson County Literacy Council (JCLC) is hosting two free workshops on the use and storage of prescription pain medications.   Let’s Talk About Pain Medicines is a free 60-minute educational program developed by Wisconsin Health Literacy to help participants obtain a better understanding of how to more safely and effectively use prescription pain (opioid) medicine.
These workshops will be held on Thursday, August 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fort Atkinson Senior Center located at 307 Robert Street in Fort Atkinson and on Tuesday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m.  at the Jefferson Senior Center located at 859 Collins Road in Jefferson.

Program topics include:
  • The differences between prescription opioids and other pain medicines
  • Safe storage of prescription pain medicine to help prevent others from finding and using them
  • What to do with unused prescription pain medicine
  • Understanding of label directions (when and how long to take the medicine)
  • The importance of understanding warning labels
  • When to call the pharmacist or provider

Each participant will receive a workbook, a pill box, and four fact sheets to take home, plus the chance to enter into a prize drawing at the end of the program.
Community members of all ages are invited and encouraged to attend this free, informational session.  Opioid addiction is a national health crisis.  Individuals need to be aware of the risks associated with using these medications and exercise caution when storing medications at home to prevent potential theft or abuse by children, grandchildren or others.

This project is supported by Security Health Plan.  The workshops are presented by non-clinical facilitators and are not intended to serve as medical advice.

To reserve your seat at one of these workshops, please contact the Jefferson County Literacy Council at 920-675-0500 or notify the Fort Atkinson (920-563-7773) or Jefferson (920-674-7728) Senior Centers.

Literacy is the strongest predictor of an individual’s health status, more than age, education or ethnicity.  The Jefferson County Literacy Council (JCLC) has provided literacy education to adults throughout Jefferson County and in the Jefferson County jail since 2001.  Programs include: adult basic education, English as a Second Language, preparation for GED and U.S. Citizenship and computer literacy.  Instruction is provided by certified instructors and trained volunteers to work with adults one-to-one or in small groups to help them reach their educational goals.  If you, or someone you know, would benefit from these services, please contact JCLC at 920-675-0500 for more information.
