Celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week

During National Travel and Tourism Week, May 5 through 11, the Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes the local impact of travel and tourism’s economic, social and cultural impact.
The Chamber annually presents the ‘Tourism Counts’ award to an individual, business or organization who, by their leadership and efforts, have made a difference in the development of tourism in our area. The award has been given 25 times, consecutively since 1993. Past recipients who have played a vital tourism role in our area include The Friends of Lorine Niedecker, Rick Klopcic of The Fireside Dinner Theatre, Roger Kriedeman, Marilyn Thorndycraft, Gus Klatt, June Brandow of The Fireside Dinner Theatre, Mike and Debbie Rusch of Lamp Post Inn B&B, Don Schink (who taught us to “Love Where You Live”), The City of Fort Atkinson, Hoard Historical Museum, Sandy Mayer of High Pointe Properties, Fort Atkinson Beautification Council, Jefferson County Bicycle Club, Rudy Bushcott, Holiday Inn Express, Fort Community Foundation, Dennis and Gerry Rybicke of LaGrange B&B, Steve Cline of Jellystone Park, Cynthia Holt for the Farmers Market development, Fort Atkinson Generals, Café Carpe, Sue Zimmerman, Koshkonong Mounds Country Club, 2 Rivers Bicycle and Outdoor and Busy Barns Adventure Farm.
The tourism industry remains a top contributor to Wisconsin’s economy, generating billions of dollars in state and local revenues and creating thousands of jobs. Domestic and international travelers to Wisconsin spent $20.6 billion in 2017 and generated $1.5billion to federal, state and local governments. Tourism supports 195,225 jobs, an increase of 13.5% over the last seven years. Without these jobs generated by domestic and international travel, Wisconsin’s 2016 unemployment rate of 4.1% would have been 8.0% of the labor force. Wisconsin ranks number one among its Midwest competitors in fun, family-friendliness, affordability and a welcoming, worry-free atmosphere.
National Travel and Tourism Week is recognized annually the first full week in May. To learn more about Fort Atkinson’s tourist attractions, stop in at the Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce Monday through Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm, or visit www.fortchamber.com.
