Jefferson County Literacy Council Encourages Tutor Recruitment

Jefferson, WI (August 13, 2018) — In Jefferson County, roughly 30 adults and children are waiting for help because there aren’t enough tutors.   Jefferson County Literacy Council and other Wisconsin Literacy members join Literacy Can’t Wait, a volunteer tutor recruitment drive that encourages local residents to give two hours a week to change lives through literacy.  Literacy Can’t Wait, supported by Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the American Family Dreams Foundation, Vernon Library Supplies, and WEA Trust, will recruit, train and match new volunteer tutors with adults seeking much-needed literacy service, including work-readiness and computer skills, basic math, reading and writing, English language and citizenship class.  To find out where you can become a tutor, go to http://www.jclc.us

JCLC serves adults in small classes and one on one in all of the eight communities within Jefferson County.  The organization partners with libraries, schools, churches and businesses to provide services to adults in need.

Most tutors volunteer about two hours per week, often providing life-changing results for adults and children.  Professionally trained volunteer tutors play an important role in helping people earn their high school equivalency or U.S. citizenship.  Tutors can help parents gain the confidence to be more involved in their children’s education. They offer basic skills to help adults get better jobs through improved computer and math skills and basic literacy services. Time spent tutoring impacts the adult learner’s entire family, including their success at work, their children’s success in school and their ability to positively engage in their community

If you are looking to have a powerful impact on someone’s life, consider giving a few hours a week to be a literacy tutor,” says Michele Erikson, Executive Director of Wisconsin Literacy, “The Literacy Can’t Wait recruitment effort allows members of the community to give back through the gift of their time and reading skills.  Teaching experience is not required, just a desire to empower others with the basic skills that are so important.
