Students Invited to Business World
Students Invited to Business World
The Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce annually supports two students to attend Wisconsin Business World, a program of WMC Foundation. The program aims to provide high school students with economic and financial literacy education, while teaching the importance of free-market enterprise. Business World hosts three, four-day summer camps each year and numerous one-day "mini" programs during the school year for school districts around the state.
Students participate in hands-on exercises that easily relate to the everyday life of running a business and finish each program with a better understanding of the intricacies of business. The program also exposes students to the variety of different career opportunities available after high school or college.
The cost for a student to attend is $75, and the Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce covers any additional fees. Students stay on-site in a college dorm for the duration of the program. This year’s programs are hosted at St. Norbert College in De Pere, June 17-20; UW-Madison, June 24-27; and UW-Stevens Point, July 15-18.
A typical week involves a business simulation in which participants try to create a new product and develop a business and marketing plan. Topics such as business ethics, financial literacy and the impact of social media are presented by company executives and university staff, and students have free time each evening for games and socializing. Additional program details can be found at www.wmc.org/programs/business-world.
Registration is open now, and Fort Atkinson High School students can contact the Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce to express their interest in participating. The chamber is open Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, at 244 North Main Street; 920-563-3210.
